Starfish Swim School Provides Life-long Lessons For Little Ones

(CBS4) DENVER - Former Nurse Compelled To Open Swim School

The woman behind a swim school in Denver felt she didn't have a choice but to start the company after she almost lost her sister in a near drowning at the age of two.

Ann Shidler feels that learning to swim has never been an option. When she became a nurse, the message really hit home.

"There were so many times I dealt with children on ventilators from near drownings," Shidler said. "It impacted me terribly, that these kids where in that place from a situation that is totally preventable."

That's when she invested her life savings to save lives and opened the Starfish Swim School.

"I say the younger the sooner, the safer," Shidler said. "We start children here as young as 6 months in a parent and me program."

Shidler said children need to learn the basics.

"If they were to fall into the water, they can turn around and swim back or to go on the back and float," she said.
