Teaching Philosophies and Goals

pic

Starfish Swim School’s philosophy embraces a committed, family atmosphere, teaching children how to swim, and safely enjoy the water, while building skills and developing their confidence in a warm, safe, and caring environment.

Our philosophy and goal is for children to feel and be safe in the water. Therefore, techniques such as throwing children into the water are NEVER practiced. These are dangerous techniques that are not conducive to learning how to swim, but rather to fear the water.

Starfish Swim School is progressive in our techniques. Due to class size being small, each child gets individualized attention to meet their learning needs and skill level. Our expert instructors are focused, hands-on, respectful and caring. Children progress to the next swim class levels according to their individual abilities as assessed by our well-trained staff.

In order to avoid dependence on flotation devices, we do not teach using any type of floatation devices (i.e. waterwings, noodles, inner tubes, bubble belts, life jackets, etc.) because we want children to learn to use their own bodies to move through the water. Flotation devices cause children to develop a false sense of security in the water.  If your child has utilized flotation devices in the past, they are likely to have a difficult time when they first learn to experience the feeling of their own bodies in the water without the flotation support.  There are types of flotation devices, such as life jackets, that are not guaranteed to float an unconscious wearer face-up in the water. For more information, please see our Parental Tips page.

picStarfish Swim School is also a proud member of the United States Swim School Association. The USSSA is an association of quality schools devoted to aquatic education for lifelong safety, fun and health.
